The Iron Mouth welcomes a report from Field Correspondent MB in Denver
I have done some volunteer work for the Kerry campaign over the past few weeks--some phone bank calling, and last weekend did some door to door canvassing in downtown Denver. It was very fulfilling, although I did not know what to expect in terms of the door to door. What I found was the following--in just over 5 hours I spoke with between 40-50 people, and the breakdown was as follows--27 said they were definitely voting for Kerry, 6 for Bush, another 6 undecided and a handful of people either choosing 3rd party candidates (downright stupid) or not voting at all (worst of all, irresponsible).
Within those numbers, I also noticed/experienced the following...the Kerry supporters to a man were VERY enthusiastic about there choice, proud even to let me know who they were voting for...while it seemed more of the Bush supporters were almost sorry to say whom they were voting for--I got the feeling they were feeling the pressure of the Kerry momentum (otherwise known as the truth) and that they knew they weren't casting a very popular vote. I also noticed that each and every person of color I spoke with, be it black, Hispanic, etc. were not only definitely voting for Kerry, but were pissed as hell at Bush directly--many an expletive laden narrative came from this portion of voters as I spoke with them, genuine hostility in their words and mannerisms (glad I'm on their side!).
Finally, I had a memorable conversation with a young man, maybe 30 years old, who came to his door in a wheelchair with both legs wrapped in heavy gauze. He was not able to use his legs due to a degenerative disease he had suffered from for years. This man told me he had received a mature stem cell transplant via his sister, and it was not a good experience to say the least. The way he explained it was that all the viruses, etc. that his sister's system had built up a tolerance against during her lifetime then turned around and attacked his system soon after he received the transplant, actually worsening his condition. He said that if it had been an embryonic stem cell transplant that would not have happened. As it is today he says he doesn't know if he'll ever be able to walk again, and seems to harbor a genuine resentment due to the situation that is now his every day reality. He is strongly voting for John Kerry in large part because of his stance on embryonic stem cell transplants, as he says it gives him some form of hope for his future.
This is what I found talking to the people of a small section of Denver one Saturday afternoon, let's all just hope this is a small put proportionately correct reflection of the way the majority of Americans feel about the trainwreck of a presidency that we've been forced to live through over the past 4 years...forget Iraq, 3 more weeks and it's the American people who will be liberated!
See You On The Front Lines!
