« Unfinished Draft Constitution? | Main | My How Times Have Changed.... »

Monday - What he really said:

"You know, I don't know about this doctrine of assassination, but if he thinks we're trying to assassinate him, I think that we really ought to go ahead and do it. It's a whole lot cheaper than starting a war, and I don't think any oil shipments will stop.  We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability. We don't need another $200 billion war to get rid of one, you know, strong-arm dictator. It's a whole lot easier to have some of the covert operatives do the job and then get it over with."

Wednesday - What he claims he said:

"I didn't say 'assassination.' I said our special forces should 'take him out.' 'Take him out' could be a number of things including kidnapping."

Which brings to mind Charles Barkley's famous quip about some of the claims he made in his autobiography: "I was misquoted."

Only Pat Robertson doesn't have Barkley's jump shot.  Or personality.  Or wit.

Putting aside the issue of whether Pat Robertson "misquoted" himself, is it appropriate for a Christian evangelical preacher cum Republican party presidential candidate to endorse kidnapping?

WWJD, Pat?

As their once secure position of power crumbles day after day, they just get more and more extreme. They're like addicts, all they've got is more of the same thing. Nobody's buying any more. Note also the dig into Bush's war.

"They"? WTF? Don't lump a has been in with the rest of us. I criticized Robertson from the get go, he's an ass.

http://jscottbarnard.blogspot.com/2005/08/idiot-watch.html

Maybe you folks should try a little criticism of your wingnuts like Kos "Screw Them", Michael Moore or whoever. Robertson no more represents many of us than Kos or Moore represents you two.

But wait, I thought the shrill progressives were the true base and voices for the Democratic Party. At least that's what I understand from listening to Moveon.org and Donna Brazile on News and Notes yesterday.

I'm all for calling someone on saying something stupid, but do we have to accept that there is an equivalency between Pat Robertson and some dumbass nobody writing at MoveOn.org or DailyKos? We are talking about someone who is famous, owns a major media empire, is a former Republican presidential candidate with a big audience and a lot of political pull in the Christian right segment of the Republican base who by the way has been to the White House to meet President Bush probably more times than some nobody lefty like Ward Churchill set foot in DC. What pisses me off is Robertson has a habit of saying stupid inflammatory things most of which I consider anti-American. His musings on how 9/11 was what we get for forsaking God was particularly sickening but somehow created less buzz than this recent comment.

GH, I disagree. The real issue at stake here is the ability of Chavez and his allies to present a forward looking vision of human progress able to overcome the world-wide crisis surrounding the "S" word. The Bolivarian revolution is showing that you can have participatory democracy, free elections won by large margins and still provide the poor with subsidized health care, landless peasants with farms and working folks with sustainable employment. What's more than that, you can do all these things and call them what they are. To paraphrase Warren Beatty, say it with me: socialism.

This has little or nothing to do with Christianity. Instead, what is at stake here is much greater, a fact well understood by the Reverend and his ilk, as well as CondaSkeeza, Dick Cheney and the growing legions of black shirts running around this "moribund Weimar formation" we call America.
